A number of enquiries have been made around the reservoir in Keidebees. Keidebees is a residential area in Upington. The Dawid Kruiper municipality was inundated with enquiries around the water which is pumped from the reservoir. We want to put the public and the community at ease by explaining what is happening at the reservoir.
The development at the reservoir is normal maintenance work which is taking place in all the water systems throughout the country.
The Keidebees reservoir is fitted with a floating roof, which is nearing the end of its useful life. This roof became torn, allowing the ingress of foreign matter into the reservoir. This renders the water unsuitable for human consumption. This reservoir was, as a precautionary measure, taken out of operation for the needed repair works.
The municipality had to source, and appoint, the sole supplier of this roofing material (which is a special type of membrane) to effect the repair work
During this process the reservoir complex needed to be isolated from the rest of the distribution network. However it was found that some of the shut off valves were leaking through and this resulted in the reservoir still accumulating some water and this water needed to be drained from time to time. What the people have seen as a leaking pipe was actually just the water which was drained from the reservoir.
The repair work to the roof has now been completed.
Our investigation on this roof also suggests that this roof is approaching the end of its useful lifespan and the distress is now beginning to show. The municipality is in the process to secure funding for the replacement of this roof. You can contact Patrick Williams on (054) 338 7008 / 079 275 0088 for more information.
