We are fresh from the International Mandela Day celebrations which were held in July. He is undoubtedly a statesman and a leader of note. We witnessed how the poor, the rich, whites, blacks, different religious groups and different countries celebrated his legacy. ‘A lot of people have respect and admiration for the former State President of the Republic of South Africa because he stood for justice and equality for all of us,’ said the Mayor of the Dawid Kruiper municipality, Me Limakatso Koloi.
We saw how important it is to preserve the legacy of Nelson Mandela and our national days. The Dawid Kruiper municipality took part in a number of Mandela day activities which will be published in the newspapers.
We have another important day on our calendar. It is the 9th of August. This day commemorates the 9 August 1956 march. Women from across South Africa marched and petitioned against the pass laws.
On this day in 1956, over 20 000 women of all races and ages from every corner of South Africa marched together towards the Union Buildings.
These event and others gave us freedom in South Africa today. Women are not carrying passes anymore. All of us are now issued with the ID card. We now enjoy equality before the law, the right to live where we want to, the right to send our kids to the schools of our choice, the right to hold positions in society.
